2012 Season

Holderness Duo Crowned Yorkshire Champions.

22nd July 2012

Sam Winter and Mark Goodfellow this afternoon won the Yorkshire County Bowling Association pairs championship at Kingston BC, Ash Grove in Hull.

On a sundrenched afternoon, with lots of spectators and a fair few fellow team members supporting them, the Holderness boys held off the challenge of Nafferton BC duo, Ben Render and Dave Newsome. Falling behind on the first two ends they soon steadied and fell into a great rythm, forging ahead powerfully. The only danger from the Nafferton pair was when Sam and Mark dropped two consecutive three's, to lead by only 5 shots at 13 v 8. In a game that the Hull pair totally dominated they dropped very few further shots, thanks to some great leading by Mark, aided by some great Skip play by Sam, to turn heads around or further improve the lie that Mark had set up. The boys from East Park eventually won 24 v 12, with the handshakes coming on the 20th end.

A fantastic achievement by the Holderness Pair, who were the first representatives of the club to appear in a County pairs final. They will now appear in the National Championships at Worthing in August as the Yorkshire Champions, and will also represent the County in the Northern Counties Championships in Morpeth, Northumberland on the first weekend of September, where they will be up against the pairs Champions of Durham, Northumberland, Cumbria and Lancashire in another prestigious tournament only open to the elite of each County.

Narrow Defeat Sees Marshall Defence End.

21st July 2012

A narrow defeat at the home of Middlesborough BC, saw the clubs defence of the Yorkshire team Championship end on Saturday afternoon. In what was always going to be a very tough challenge between the finalists from the previous three seasons, it was the visitors from Hull who made all of the early running, right through to the midway stage, holding a 14 shot advantage at one stage.

At this point the home team were very quiet and subdued, and clearly worried by the early dominance of the reigning champions. But on a very tricky green, the advantages that some rinks held evaporated slightly, whilst those who were holding the home team started to fall behind.  Missing a couple of experienced players did not help the Holderness team, but events on the last end on two of the rinks ultimately cost the visitors. On an awful rink, the rink skipped by Mark Goodfellow dropped a count of 5 against England international Vinnie O'Neil. Whilst next door Alistair Cook's rink were holding a very solid 5 or 6, until the last wood by Steve Slaughter, who crashed into the front of the head hoping to reduce the defecit, he luckily saw his wood crash from side to side and land next to the jack. these events unfortunately left Sam Winter's rink with too much to do on their final end  to salvage the result.

In the end a very creditable performance by the Holderness boys, between the top two sides of Yorkshire over the last few years, in the tie of the Quarter Finals, but still a dissapointing end to this seasons challenge. It will seem a little strange for Holderness and their team not to be involved on Marshall shield finals day, having THE best record in Yorkshire, of being in the final 7 times in the last 11 seasons.

Major Trophy Defense Off To A Flier .

16th July 2012

Holderness started their defence of another prestigious trophy, against one of their main rivals, West Park BC, at the home of the tournament, Kingston BC.

On a sun drenched morning at the Ash Grove venue, it didnt take the Holderness boys long to stamp their authority on the match. The team, obviously helped by the sight of Alistair Cooks rinks scoreboard turning over at a rate of knotts, led from the front throughout. Alistairs rink took a 14 v 0 lead with only a third of the match gone, Jim Moulds rink, also had a healthy advantage at this stage. The rink skipped by Sam Winter, were losing, but always kept in touch against Dave tooleys rink. The final third of the match saw this rink claw back the defecit and record a 2 shot win, whilst the others held on to their leads. The final result was a commanding 22 shot victory across the three rinks, with each one bringing home a victory.

This comprehensive, and very satisfying victory, sees Holderness reach the semi finals again, where they will face the winners of the Kingston A v Cottingham encounter on Sunday 5th August at 10am,for a place in the final.

Holderness Make Good Start In Retaining Crown.

14th July 2012

Holderness started their defence of the Yorkshire Club Championship, with a solid display at one of their local rivals, Springhead BC.

Missing a key player, and not having much playing time over the last couple of weeks showed, during the middle part of this hard fought tie. Leading very early on, a drop of shots by all rinks in the middle period of the game saw the reigning champions fall behind by 12 shots. But a great rally by Ron Atherton's rink, who were losing by nine shots at 12 ends, saw them edge 15 v 14 in front after 15 ends. This seemed to give the rest of the team a lift. The rink skipped by Mark Goodfellow, who were losing 10 v 3 after 8 ends, went on a fine scoring run themselves. Only losing two more ends during the match to secure a fine 26 v 13 win.

This fine victory, sees Holderness reach the quarter finals again, but now an away trip, faces the club, to the Middlesbrough area. The winners of the Middlesbrough BC v Cochranes BC match, will be the next opponents. Middlesbrough BC will pose a very tough test on their own green should they be successfull, being the finalists along side Holderness for the last 3 seasons.

Holderness Pair Reach Worthing.

28th June 2012

Sam Winter and Mark Goodfellow, reached the Yorkshire county pairs final last night, and at the same time, gained a place at Worthing, to take part in the National Championships.

They overcame Andy Harper and Craig Hodgson, from Marske, in the semi-final at Kirkbymoorside BC. Although falling behind early on,  it was in the middle part of the game where the Holderness boys began to stamp their authority on the game, with some great bowls by Sam, to edge them nearer to the county final, and gain their entry into the National finals on the south coast of England.

They now face Nafferton pair, Ben Render and Dave Newsome, in the county final, which will be held in Hull this season, at Kingston BC on the 22nd July. They make their appearance at Worthing on Monday 20th August.

Holderness Four Bow Out Of Yorkshire County Fours.

Monday 25th June 2012

A place at Worthing has eluded the Holderness four of Brian Artingstoll, Gordon Elliott, Mick Binks and Jim Moulds. They lost to a strong Nafferton side consisting of Steve Dilks, Craig Baker, Scott Burrell and Chris Kelly, in the semi-final of the fours at Hutton Cranswick BC.

The Nafferton side got off to a 'good' early lead, which they never relinquished. Although the Holderness boys did rally slightly, to close the gap to 7 shots around the halfway stage, they could not maintain the challenge, and ending up loosing 28 shots to 8, on what looked a very tricky neutral venue.

Holderness Players Through To Yorkshire Semis.

Thursday 21st June 2012

Holderness will be represented in two semi-finals this season, as both our fours and pairs sides progressed beyond the quarter-finals this week.

On Monday the four of Tony Chappell, who deputised for the absent Mick Binks, Gordon Elliott, Brian Artingstoll and Jim Moulds overcame a spirited four from Dunnington BC, who knocked out our other area finalists. In a tense match at Driffield Recreation BC, the Holderness men needed an extra end to help them to victory. After what seemingly looked like a match winning bowl from the opposing skip, Jim pulled out a top drawer shot, to clip away this bowl without moving the jack with the last bowl of the game, to win 24 v 21.

They were joined last night by the pair of Sam Winter and Mark Goodfellow, who beat the Middlesborough duo skipped by Steve Slaughter at Pickering BC. After gaining the upper hand from an early stage through good consistent bowling , the Holderness pair had a few nervous moment on the last end. Leading by four going into the last end, they were at one point 5 shots against until Sam bowled a cool headed saver. Criminally, Steve Slaughter was two yards short with his last bowl. and the duo held on to secure their place in the last four, which they fully deserved apart from those jitters towards the end.

Three Holderness Players To Represent Yorkshire .

15th May 2012

Holderness will be represented by three players in this seasons County first team. Brian Artingstoll, Alistair Cook and Mark Goodfellow, have all been selected for the opening fixtures of this seasons Muras Cup.

At Borough Park BC, Redcar on Saturday 26th June, they have all been selected in the same rink, alongside another Hull bowler Dave Tooley, in the morning game against Durham. The afternoon fixture sees Mark and Alistair in the same rink to face Northumberland, whilst Brian moves across to another rink. The selectors will use these two games to finalise their team for the forthcoming Middleton Cup game against Lancashire, at Dunnington BC. All three will be hoping to impress the selectors, to make a place in the starting twenty four, for the prestigious county championship campaign.  Yorkshire reached the final of the inter county championship in 2009, and no doubt, would love to reach that stage again, at the national headquarters of bowls, Worthing in Sussex.
